The risks of not vaccinating our children.
Some parents believe that vaccination is more dangerous than the disease and believe that they would feel worse if your child was injured by receiving the vaccine for its decision not to receive it.
Yet Spain has vaccination rates among children very high, reaching around 95 percent and, in general, a highly developed awareness of the important role of vaccines and their highly effective in eradicating preventable diseases.
It is extremely important to educate parents about the benefits of vaccination and the value of routine vaccination. Pediatricians should convey to the family information on the safety of vaccines aconsajedas, trying to create a climate of confidence for them to see the risk to your child if not vaccinated.
Although vaccination has dramatically reduced the incidence of the diseases in the immunization schedule, some of which still exist in many parts of the world including countries as advanced as the United States, producing between 60 and 100 cases of measles per year .
Vaccines have contributed to the Global Health, more than any action of Public Health of the twentieth century, preventing and even eliminating in some cases diseases which once caused millions of deaths annually.
In Spain, as elsewhere, there are groups vaccinia although its implementation is significantly lower than those of Anglo-Saxon culture. The so-called vaccinia groups or movements are organized people who spread the message that vaccines are negative health effects. They advocate the non-vaccination, neglecting the vaccine efficacy and magnifying the potential side effects of vaccines.
Risks for the rejection of this preventive strategy are many and even in some cases may be fatal or permanent disabilities. For example, not being vaccinated with tetanus or meningitis and developing the disease carries a high mortality or whooping cough during the first months of life can be very serious and even fatal.
Vaccines have reduced substantially, and in some cases have come to eradicate the risk of suffering diseases that were once common in children. When reaching vaccination rates high enough, there is herd immunity to various diseases, which protects even those who are not vaccinated children which emphasizes the concept of community benefit of vaccines. The decision not to vaccinate children end up with this benefit.
