ONCE has been awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Concord 2013 . This award coincides with the 75th anniversary of the organization , founded in 1938 , and that was a step forward for blind people .

The jury considers as deserving of the prize ONCE " in response to an extraordinary work for over three quarters of a century , has enhanced the dignity and quality of life by promoting social integration of millions of people with disabilities in Spain , thus serving an example to many international initiatives that have followed this valuable experience . "

Miguel Carballeda , president of the ONCE and its Foundation , thanking the granting of the award, said that " is a tribute to all Spanish citizens , with their joint collaboration has made possible the work of the ONCE and its Foundation " .

The social ONCE currently offers coverage to a total of 71,460 people affiliated with the Organization blind ( 34,764 men and 36,696 women) and receives each year about 4,000 people who lose their sight and accessing the services of the Organization in all areas , starting with personal autonomy , to achieve education , leisure and employment, the best way to integration into society . Through ONCE Foundation extends its solidarity to other people with disabilities and, outside of Spain , works with blind and disabled people in over 50 countries.
