More research for healthier eating
Some natural food components and plants have beneficial health properties . NOVALINDUS is intended , therefore, in order to obtain and study these host components and production processes necessary for effectiveness , availability and safety prior to incorporation of a possible functional food.
CSIC researcher and co-director at the center of the platform NOVALINDUS , Elena Ibáñez , explains : " The facilities for testing in vitro or in vivo are more common, in NOVALINDUS also have semi production equipment new bioactive ingredients " . For Ibanez, " this is the most unique feature of the plant" and that unlike other similar purposes . Once it has been scientifically proven the effectiveness of the components is the time to carry out larger scale production to be marketed .
Some microalgae , for example, possess potent antioxidants in its composition. Ibanez believes that " the marine world offers exciting possibilities to obtain unique bioactive compounds such as polyphenols " .
For his part, Professor at the UAM and co-director of facilities, Guillermo Reglero , believes that " to extract these bioactive substances to be available and added to other foods is a great step forward for the health - food pairing ."
Some food components may even be effective against cancer. One of the projects currently being developed in NOVALINDUS is investigating the activity of polyphenols from rosemary against colon cancer . Ibanez says that " this disease is closely related to diet, so that food can be a crucial way of prevention." After four years of the project, the team is currently conducting in vivo animal trials using polyphenol extracts of rosemary produced a larger scale.
NOVALINDUS innovation named for the food industry and is focused so it can be used by other research organizations as well as national and international private companies that require the use of the facilities it houses.
