The Chikungunya is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito. The most common symptoms are fever and joint pain, but patients may also experience headaches, muscle pain and joint swelling, and in some cases, pain may prevent normal life. There is no specific treatment for the disease, but patients can take medication to treat pain and fever.
Most people with Chikungunya better within a week, however, some people have pain for months. People at higher risk for complications from the disease are infants, older than 65 and people with other diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and / or heart disease.
The virus originated in Africa and Southeast Asia, but last year, cases were found, first in South America including the Caribbean.
This year, Chikungunya cases have also appeared in French Polynesia, a group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean.
It is unclear whether Lohan has officially been diagnosed by a doctor Chikungunya.
To prevent Chikungunya, is recommended to avoid mosquito bites by covering exposed skin with clothing, using insect repellent and sleeping in rooms with screens on the windows or air conditioning.
